where the boys are
lance davis, bass guitarist — linda bracamonte band
I met Jimi Hendrix in Central Park when I was a young child. Jimi had just finished posing on the "Alice in Wonderland" sculpture for a photograph just as my family and I were strolling though the park on a NYC visit. He gave my big sister, big brother and me an autograph that said,
"Stay Groovy. Jimi Hendrix."
Those words have inspired me ever since and I strive to live by them. I am constantly endeavoring to maintain a state of grooviness (groovyness?) in spite of such set backs as having to maintain a day job and answering to "the man." Each day I ask myself, "Am I still groovy?" (Also, "Are those clean enough to wear again?") Sometimes I ask myself, "WWJD?" (What Would Jimi Do?) However, the answer to that question sometimes leads down a path to which I am not prepared to go, and I just stick with the ultimate question about being groovy.
My path to SG (stay groovy) has lead me to perform music before audiences both willing and otherwise, in an effort to maintain a groove quotient. At some point along the way I've tried the coronet, harmonica, jaw harp, piano, tuba & sousaphone, guitar, ukulele, double bass, and various other things I would strike in order to elicit a sound. I found the most success at remaining groovy while playing the electric bass guitar.
My efforts at SG lead me to perform in rock bands (of all stripes), country bands, bluegrass groups, jazz ensembles, folk groups, blues trios, dance bands, singer/songwriter projects, and lounge acts. I've played at the famed Roxy on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, however, I didn't make a dime, so I'm not sure how that effects the SG quotient. I played a gig in the San Fernando Valley in Zappa's back-up band once. Patricia Zappa, that is, Frank's little sister. (She's a nice lady.)
I hope my efforts in the Linda Bracomonte Band to stay groovy will prevent me from sliding into groovelessness and earn me a few bucks, too.
SG!
